OurTab ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share your information when you use the OurTab mobile application ("the App").
1. Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Email address — used for authentication and account recovery
- Display name — shown to your friends within the App
- Profile photo — optional, provided through your Google or Apple account
- Authentication provider data — information provided by Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In when you choose to authenticate through these services
Expense Data
When you use the App, we collect and store:
- Expense details — descriptions, amounts, dates, and categories of expenses you record
- Group information — group names, members, and associated expenses
- Balance and settlement data — records of who owes whom and settlement history
- Receipt images — photos of receipts you scan using the AI receipt scanning feature (processed for data extraction, then stored)
- Currency preferences — your selected currencies for expense tracking
Social Data
- Friend connections — your friend list and friend codes
- Group memberships — which groups you belong to and your role within them
Automatically Collected Data
- Device information — device type, operating system version, and app version
- Usage data — how you interact with the App, features used, and crash reports
- Location data — only if you choose to tag a location to a transaction; we do not track your location in the background
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve the App's core functionality
- Calculate balances and split expenses accurately
- Process receipt images using AI to extract expense data
- Send payment reminders and notifications you request
- Enable friend connections and group expense management
- Convert currencies using real-time exchange rates
- Diagnose technical issues and improve App performance
- Communicate important updates about the service
3. Third-Party Services
The App uses the following third-party services that may collect and process your data:
Firebase (Google)
- Firebase Authentication — manages user sign-in and account security
- Cloud Firestore — stores your expense data, groups, and balances
- Firebase Cloud Storage — stores receipt images and profile photos
- Firebase Cloud Messaging — delivers push notifications for payment reminders
- Firebase Crashlytics — collects crash reports and diagnostic data to improve stability
- Firebase Analytics — collects anonymized usage data to help us understand how the App is used
Firebase services are governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
Google Sign-In
If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile photo from your Google account. We do not access any other Google account data.
Apple Sign-In
If you sign in with Apple, we receive your name and email address (or a relay email if you choose to hide your email). We do not access any other Apple account data.
Gemini AI (Google)
Receipt images you scan are processed using Google's Gemini AI to extract text and expense data. Images are sent to Google's servers for processing and are subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We do not use your receipt data for advertising purposes.
RevenueCat
Subscription management is handled through RevenueCat, which processes purchase data from the app stores. RevenueCat's privacy policy is available at revenuecat.com/privacy.
4. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.
We may share your information only in the following circumstances:
- With your friends and group members — your name, profile photo, and shared expense data are visible to people you connect with in the App
- With service providers — we share data with the third-party services listed above solely to provide App functionality
- For legal compliance — we may disclose your information if required by law, regulation, or legal process
- To protect rights and safety — we may share information to prevent fraud, protect our rights, or ensure user safety
5. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including:
- Encrypted data transmission using HTTPS/TLS
- Secure authentication through Firebase Authentication
- Firestore security rules that restrict data access to authorized users
- Regular security reviews of our infrastructure and code
While we strive to protect your data, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your information.
6. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the service. Expense data and settlement history are retained to maintain accurate balance records. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your data — view the personal information we have about you
- Delete your account — delete your account and associated data through the App's settings
- Export your data — request a copy of your data by contacting us
- Correct your information — update your profile information at any time within the App
- Opt out of analytics — contact us to opt out of non-essential analytics data collection

8. Children's Privacy
OurTab is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that we have inadvertently collected data from a child under 13, we will promptly delete that information. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us at support@ourtab.app.
9. International Data Transfers
Your data may be stored and processed on servers located outside your country of residence, including in the United States, through our use of Firebase and Google Cloud services. By using the App, you consent to this transfer. We ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place for international data transfers.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by other means. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Privacy Policy. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
